Spent the morning watching DVD of the 2003 MIJ concert of SMAP in Yokohama. Several things sprung to mind while watching it, namely:

+ there is no synchronized dancing in SMAP :)
+ no matter what one is always too slow and one is always too fast while dancing
+ the five are not even synchronized with their back-up dancers :)
+ Goro looks as if his band members have to drag him out onto the stage and only halfway into the concert he puts in some effort into dancing and into ENJOYING himself.
+ Nakai is a wonderful dancer, very tight and tense.
+ Nakai definitely can't sing.
+ Takuya dances like a girl, all fluent and effortless and he *twirls*
+ Takuya is a hard rocker at heart
+ Takuya is one charming rogue (in a good way)
+ Shingo is KAWAII - even in drags and as a marionette.
+ Tsuyoshi can dance - if he doesn't forget his steps :)
+ twirling is a cover for not knowing one's steps

You make me laugh, Una! Reading your post I imagined all of the "in colors"... So, Goro is so lazy, or just afraid of stage shows? ;)

Yeah, Nakai definitely CAN dance, but CAN't sing. I noticed this myself already. :)

And - oh, yeah, "synchronized dancing" and SMAP are incompatible concepts! :D In some concert clip I saw, Nakai and Kimura almost collided (twice!!!)in dancing!

i think he is lazy .. he is a very laid back and intellectual person (you know, connoisseur of women and wine ;-)) so I guess he needs some warm-up time till he gets into it, but still he is always half to a full beat off the rest of the others :)

Well, here is ot the hope that in their 20th year they will all surprise us with a fully synchronized dance performance for ONE FULL song :)
Though I noticed in the PopUp concert they were synchronized for half a chorus - that is quite a feat.
And yeah, Nakai has the problem of running everyone to ground. In the first or second song in PopUp, he almost collides with Tsuyoshi :)
BUT! Takuya and Shingo were synchronized and Shingo seems to have adapted the very effortless, fluent *see if I care* dance style of Taku-san. :D

So he's lazy... I can't blame him, I'm a bit lazy myself! :)

I think he (Shingo) can dance, he has this talent to some degree.

As for Takuya-san, I agree, he's very free and even graceful in dancing: fluent movements, almost like a girl, (keh, when he was younger, about 22-23, he WAS beautiful like a girl!), but at the same time he has in him this unmistakable and strong male air.. if you understand me.:) This contradiction that somehow exists in him in strange harmony, always intrigues me - since the first time I saw him. And this attracts me a lot.

Also I can agree that Kumura-san does rock songs well - and with obvious pleasure! The same about jazz-kind songs... I love him singing "Natsu", (which is very jazzish thing) - and he does it quite well... May be in his heart he feels that more "energetic" and "aggressive" music suits his flamboyant self better that pop? It seems like there is always some fire and flames of energy inside him.

Here is evidence that SMAP NEVER danced synchronized (even though they tried their best) This is from 1989

and 1990

Yeah Kimura does the aggressive part very well, even though I think he is a very shy man at heart. Sometimes on SmapxSmap there are times when he comes across as shy. I guess he has a stage persona.

Thank you for video clops, Una! I didn't seem them before! In fact, I almost didn't see any of their teens pis. As kids SMAPpis are were very funny. Also what a surprise: if Goro and that 6th boy of SMAP (don't remember his name)in their teens were VERY pretty, like dolls, Kimura in opposite looked "ugly duckling" in his teens - with his big nose... A gorgeous swan will appear only in his 20s.

Speaking about Kimura-san's "aggressive" and "flamboyant" self I meant exactly his _stage_ persona. In artist stage persona and private one could be very different, ne? Well, in his private life Kimura-san could be very shy, even "closed" home person - quite possible! But at the stage... This is quite obvious that he LOVES to be at the stage, to perform, to feel and absorb the energy of overcrowded hall... He enjoys it. And at the stage he can be and very often is flamboyant.
