Some of you might have heard about the two year on-going legal battle of a Northern Ireland family and their dog Lennox. Lennox was a cross between a Lab and a pit bull type dog. As a pup he looked more like a Lab but when he grew his head shape was that of a pitbull with Labby ears and snout. He was neutered, chipped and registered and trained as a therapy dog for the disabled little daughter of the family with the local Belfast City Council and for five years he got his official license from them. According to the law of NI Pitbull type dogs are banned. Lennox was DNA tested and while there is a bull terrier in there, he was not labeled as Pit bull type dog, as he had so much of a Labrador in him-

Until one day Dog wardens from the BCC turned up and after measuring him with a sewing tape measure, seized the dog and claimed him to be a dangerous animal under the BSL (Breed Specific List). Lennox was brought to an undisclosed place where photographic evidence showed that he was held in a small stable, sitting in his own feces. The dog warden who had claimed him was photographed cuddling Lennox who even showed no signs of dangerous behaviour in his new altered living conditions, but his health deteriorated with his coat missing in large portions on his rump and skin infections all over his face.
When a court decision arrived whether Lennox could be rehabilitated and returned to the family or re-homed instead of put to death, said dog warden, who can be seen cuddling Lennox in photos, lied in court saying: 'Lennox is dangerous, I'm afraid of him and he is a risk to the public's safety'.
The Belfast City Council ignored all pleas of re-homing and placing Lennox with internationally known dog trainers. Victoria Sitwell of It's Me or the Dog even offered to adopt him but to no avail. (Save Lennox)

Today, this morning, Lennox was put to death. There is nothing humane in this situation, despite what the BCC claims.

Dangerous dog is put to sleep following final court decision

11 July 2012

Belfast City Council confirmed today that the dog Lennox, an illegal pit-bull terrier type, has been humanely put to sleep. This was in accordance with the Order of the County Court which was affirmed by the Northern Ireland Court of Appeal.

Whilst there is an exemption scheme to which dogs of this type (pit-bull terrier type) may be admitted as an alternative to destruction, there were no such measures that could be applied in this case that would address the concerns relating to public safety. The Council`s expert described the dog as one of the most unpredictable and dangerous dogs he had come across.

Over the past two years, Council officials have been subjected to a sustained campaign of abuse including threats of violence and death threats. The Council has been in ongoing contact with the PSNI in relation to that.

The Council regrets that the court action was necessary but would emphasise that the safety of the public remains its key priority.

A danger to public safety? You better start putting yourself out of office, Belfast City Council. Because YOU are a safety risk! Who will be next on your BSL? Dogs with certain sized fangs? Or a dog peeing on the street corner?
While we are at it, why not euthanize humans? After all, WE potentially kill. Why not kill all children of murderers ... because hey, they share the same DNA (= read breed/race) and could turn on the public one day in the unforeseeable future. BCC, you showed that fascist/racist thinking never died out after Hitler's death.

Sweet, sweet Lennox. At least you are not in the hands of some fascist, senseless human monsters anymore, that only see rules and laws but not compassion and justice.
Hopefully, when time comes, all these liars will have to answer for themselves.

Remember, punish the deed not the breed!!!

Really really sad story! I am not a pet person, must confess, but respect and understand those who love their animals since I do love them as creatures of this world... I can't understand cruelty on animals... I really can't comprehend it...

With all the global matters going around... those people didn't have better things to do that pick on that family and their beloved dog... Sometimes administrations and governments have their priorities turned outside down... and the politically correct/ let's look good is a thing that can be so scary...

This story hurt me but I know it hurt you more. I am sorry dear! *hugs*

Thank you. You knwo these are just the events that make me loose more and more faith in humanity as a whole. Being an animal rights activist and working as a rescuer I have come across so many idiots that this case shouldn't have touched me as much as it did and yet it makes me so angry.
That dog had never bitten anyone, and yet his life was ended because of some rules and laws that were made hastily after severe and fatal bitings in the past.

Some of these pitbull type dogs can be dangerous, but most of them, who have been raised in loving surroundings are the best family pets ... gentle, loyal and cuddle-monsters to boot. All things you would normally look for in a dog. There are even cases in the US were former dog fighting Pitbulls have been re-homed into families and they show only gentleness and even avoid dog-dog or dog-human aggressiveness. That breed is just as dangerous at the other end of its leash - the human being.

I have no words. I had such hope the other day, when they agreed to look at everything again. I really thought it was their chance to save face and they would agree to let him be rehomed in the US. I hope their freakin' pet chihuahuas (or whatever cutesy-poo breed they no doubt own) eat their faces off. And I'm not even kidding. I have so much hate in me right now.

This broke my heart when I read it. For no reason a perfectly calm and submissive dog, a dog that has been trained to serve and help humans was put down??!?!

We the so call superior animal race are the worse in the animal kingdom! And yet we get away with everything. Aren't we suppose to be the civil ones? I guess not:(
