I really should return to read the oldies but goldies of English Literature ... The adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's NORTH & SOUTH is very, very good (insert fangirl moment here: It's HAWT!!!)
Yes I know, Gaskell can be a bit slow in places, especially if she tries to describe the social divide with Dickensian intensity (she was friends with Dickens) but her 1854 novel North & South always held a special place in my literary heart ever since I did a couple of seminars on Victorian novels (I MUST see the mini-series Middlemarch again).

dangermousie I got hooked instantly. I already knew the 1975 adaptation with Patrick Stewart as Thornton but the new 2004 BBC adaptation is brilliant. A bit of poetic license can be found in some characterization but it can be overlooked as the 4 hour dramatic romance is tightly written and brilliantly adapted.
And the costumes ... mid 1800's ... and now I can see why so many folks love the Victorian era .. I think I might make myself one or two gowns from this era :)
