where has the year gone???

So much happened during these past months that I barely noticed the passage of time, or rather that I noticed but every moment, every image was so new, so overwhelming, that moments blended well into each other and became a blur of events that still leave me gobsmacked.
Settling ito the rhythm of our new home has been kind of smoothly. It still is so new that the quirks of our new home are still a bit of a surprise rather than a nuisance (electricity outages) though the lack of actual neighbours (well neighbours who are at home during the day that is) concerns me a wee bit.
There are days where I do not see anyone for a good portion of the day. The dogs keep me company while I work on various projects but when I walk the dogs it seems as if I'm the only person at this neck of the woods. Of course, there is a farmer and his farming machine in the distance but no one you can actually talk to.
I hope it will change a bit when I start to work again ... my professional work that is.

Halloween was a quiet affair but we decorated nevertheless. I wonder what will happen here during Martinmas. Traditionally, Saint Martin will go through the town/city/village and sharing his mantle with the poor and kids going Kripschen with paper lanterns. They go from door to door and sing Martinmas carols and as payment they get sweets and treats. I wonder if that is done here as well ... I guess I need to stock up on sweets :)

Well, hello November. My birth months ... usually it was something to look forward to because of EIleen coming for a visit but this year it seems she can't make it.

:( I'm sorry. It's a really tight schedule this year, I'm in Frankfurt next weekend and we are preparing this year's Klausurtagung at work. I'm a mod and heavily involved in the preparations, I won't be able to make it. :(

I'm thinking about my birthday next year, if you'll have me? I have so much holiday left to take by the end of March.

Sounds heavenly. I could do with some long walks in the middle of nowhere and some good conversation, and I can't wait to see your new house and kitchen, and everything! I know I'm hopeless at keeping in touch but I miss you loads. *huggles*

The Halloween decorations are exquisite!! ;)

I would feel the same about not being anybody else around :S Right now I also spend a bit part of the day without talking to anybody except emails so I know what you mean

Your b-day is in November as Takuya's!? ;) Interesting ;)

I was born a couple of minutes past midnight on the 14th.

It is strange here ... this is a village but there is no one really here during the day. The kids are at school. The older ppl don't go outside into the street and those my age are working. This village, even though it is old - harking back to the medieval ages - it is more of a suburb where ppl only sleep there. Weird!

the Halloween decoration looks gorgeous!
I haven't even realized that halloween passed by, I just wondered why there were so many wounded people at some random subway station on th 31st, when a freind reminded me, oh today's Halloween ^^'

wow, what a cool picture from Halloween! I'm glad things are going smoothly settling into your new home. I hope you can find some signs of life in your neighborhood, now! Is there a park or anything? There MUST be people some place, right

We live in a village ... but that village has no centre ... it is just one long street with little cottages and farm houses lining the street. The cemetary and church is quite nice, but we have no infrastructure .. no shops, no nothing. For groceries and stuff we need to drive three villages over.
But it is quiet, except for those wannabe formula 1 racers using our main street as a racing course.

ahhh...so you're really kind of out in the country, aren't you? it does sound pretty, though! were you more in the suburbs or city before?

Well officially our village is a suburb of a bigger city but as we are the most Western part of that city we are surrounded by fields, meadows and woods. It's funny really, two bigger towns are nearer than our own city's centre. We only need 2 kilometer to Erkelenz but 14 kilometers to Moenchengladbach (which is the name of the city we live in now).

Lovely Halloween decorations. And I've never heard of Martinmas. When does it come?

Also, I kind of like the idea of walking the dog and never running into anyone, at least some days.

Martinmas is a particularly European tradition, celebrated on the European mainland and in countries with a strong Roman Catholic population. Martinmas on wikipedia (). In Germany we celebrate it between the 7th and 11th November with children singing carols and carrying paper lanterns. It is almost like trick or treating but without the costumes and the tricking. The kids go from home to home, shop to shop and sing their carols and as a thank you they get sweets and apples and mandarines.
