well, teenagers liking mindless romantic drivel I get; it's the adult women swooning over it that completely blows my mind! Teens still have time to develop live experience and taste in literature/film. I can't understand all the women in their 40s and 50s who are going nuts for it! The girls in their 20s rushing out to read the books (like my cousins, gasp!) are bad enough. Maybe it says something about our education system? the thing that just turns my stomach is how badly written they are, and how many far better vampire novels are completely overlooked!

True ... welll I think the reason why so many 40+ women like that kind of thing is a sign of the times too ... look at our fandoms ... hell I'm a 40plus woman lusting after far younger guys - but at least they make good music and have talent, while the writer of the books has none.
Twilight seems so generic ... I mean where is the mysticism? The specialty? Vampires acting like spoiled teenagers? Why not write just a novel about spoiled teenagers? Ahhh ... yes it won't sell. And sorry as soon as I would have come upon the passage of a sparkling Edward I would have laughed my ass off. Jeesh ... there are really good vampire novels out there, far better written, original and mysterious but Twatlight is just ... mediocre. But merdiocre is good in our educational systems nowadays :(

hmm...I also get 40-something women lusting after younger men, but lusting after brooding, mindless, teenage [looking] vampires? there's just so much better out there for women and tweens!

The Twilight story is completely derivative, that was my number one problem with it. Nothing unique about it at all, she just ripped off dozens of other writers of the genre and then dumbed it down, added her bad writing and somehow it's popular. The thing that REALLY bothers me about the plotline. These 'people' are supposed to be 100+ years old. Why are they still acting like they're 16? Is that part of her vampire mythology? That whatever age you die at is the mental age you remain for eternity? OMG, it's just so dumb.

For once, I'd like to read some vampire fiction that treats the idea of living for eternity with some integrity. Anne Rice did it (to an extent). 40-year-old me is NOTHING like 20-year-old me was. I can't even imagine what I would be like if I lived to be 100, 200, 500? Without the body deteriorating? It could just be so interesting...and non-Twilight-like!
