Taking a break from subbing SMAStation Ganbarimashou ... my section is finished AT LAST ... now fine tuning and re-listening, if I got everything right. Esp. the Kamen Rider bit :)

So yesterday I posted my favourite song(s) and today it is my favourite movies or movies that have influenced me deeply.
I can't chose between two Merchant/Ivory movies from the 1980's ... there is A Room With A View from 1985 and Maurice from 1987 and even though both play in Edwardian England their plot is so different. Both movies (scripted from novels by E.M. Forster) have flaws, but the dresses, the characters .. the everything is soooo wonderful. I guess these two really fired up my interest in historic clothing and a long time passion for actor Rupert Grave.

A Room with a View
George shouting his creed.

Maurice

But I think my all time favourite movie is of a different subject. As a child I loved pirate movies. I have seen Capt. Blood, The Red Corsair ... the lot ... but one movie that has accompanied me throughout my life is the following:

The Black Swan

Oh I love how Maureen O'Hara says: "Jamie-Boy!" Jeesh I just realized that movie is 67 years old :)

squee! the Black Swan! Tyrone Power! Swoon! I must rent it, been so long since I've seen that one! I also absolutely ADORED Room with a View. Quite possibly the only good role Julian Sands ever created! And Maggie Smith is fabulous!

It IS the only role Julian Sands did well ... And perhaps Gothic where he played PB Shelley alongside Gabriel Byrne as Byron.
He made some very unfortunate career choices :s

A Room with a View is such a wonderful and all in all rounded movie .. it all somehow fits together despite its flaws .. and the music .. Dame Kiri Te Kanawa singing "Chi il bel sogno di Doretta" ... *sigh*

hmm...I remember rather liking "Gothic", though not sure if I would watching it again. One of the other films I liked him in was "Siesta".

urgh...I absolutely adored the music in Room with a View, such a stand-out! that, and the scenery, so beautiful! This time around I appreciated all the older characters much more, such as the Miss Allens, Mr. Elliot, Mr. Beebe and even cousin Charlotte. So many great ones!

Just a word of warning about Maurice - it's one of the first gay movies ever. So just you know :)

But they are all fun .. and the costumes!!!!! *drool*

Tyrone Power is the one few men that three generations of women in my family could agree on, but I think we all preferred him in "The Mark of Zorro" over "The Black Swan."
