scottishlass: (Dogs Cenour Boo)

Due to the whole stress with Big C (I really like that nickname) my period from hell reared its ugly head a little bit earlier than I expected. Am lying down on the couch, with Mr. Big C, and we both now have tummy aches.

Cenour ate two ... yes TWO!! bowls full of chicken with rice and chicken soup and now his tummy is so full it strains against his wound. But his vet told us that he needs to pack some pounds so yeah he either has to go hungry or has endure the full tummy-ache. He later on gets his meds and then hopefully we can both snooze a bit as His Hubbiness™ promised to take Little C for a long exhausting walk. Yes, please do .. I need some down time anyway.

Una, my friend who has dogs told me that dogs are essentially carnivores so they cannot eat non-meat products like milk or rice etc. Is that true? Her dogs ate noodles and pastries you see, and when they got older, their calcium level got too high and eventually died mainly due to that reason.

Milk shouldn't be given to dogs as they lack the enzyme for lactose disintegration, they are basically allergic to milk products. That is why you shouldn't feed dogs too much cheese, otherwise they can suffer from a permanent closure of the stomach and can die.

Wheat, vegetables and other stuff is needed for dogs and you can find that in normal feed for dogs, both in kibble and canned food.
Let me guess, your friend barfs her dogs, right?
(BARF = Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones And Raw Food). While I think this is a good way to feed a dog, you have to put too much extra stuff in it (oils, vitamins, extra food supplements etc.) that it is much more expensive and you have to hit the right mixture or your dog won't eat it. We tried to barf, but Cenour doesn't like raw meat, so that was out of the question.

Chicken and rice (or chicken and potatoes) are the typical fare for an upset stomach and diarhea. As rice usually extracts water from the body, I put it into self-made chicken soup to supplement minerals (salt) and counteract the rice. However, rice also provides an enzyme that soothes the stomach.

It is true that dogs which get only normal human food die much earlier than their canine counterparts which are fed dog food only. Lots of human food contain salts, and fats and so much chemical rubbish that a dog's body can't stand it for long. That is why now so many cats and dogs grow much older than 20 years ago when pets were fed normal food.

Yep, he loves bones and sticks - but real bones are yuck. He sniffs at them and then looks up at me as if he wanted to tell me to go and eat them myself :) For bones he prefers those manufactured from cow hide with some nice dried filling like rumina.

ahha! that's so cute! I'm sure Shoji would totally chew up a bone and eat the bits and I'd have him at the vet, so no bones that he can break pieces off of for him!

Me too ... he packs it away like nothing atm :) But still no real progress on his weight ... he gains by gramms instead of pounds. But at least he is eating on his own and wants to eat.

I hope that Big C will be okay in the end of things...I feel bad for animals when they need surgery...they are so helpless...>.<

I agree ...those poor creatures can't tell where exactly it does hurt. But so far Cenour took it like a real trooper, you can see he is much happier now and walks and runs around much lighter and with much more joy.

Yesterday he even took a long walk at a brisk pace. Usually we had to stand more than walk and long walks were out of the question. However, yesterday he wanted to run and trot and snuffle and got really impatient if WE took a rest :)
