Okay, so I finally managed to watch The Calium Kid this morning as Olly was off to work, I managed to get all my clients' updates done by 09:30 and the dolby surround and big telly thingiemejig all to myself :)

First impressions - I laughed my bloody arse off.
If you don't take it seriously - and from the whole set up (mockumentary) the whole movie doesn't take itself seriously - it is a damn funny little flick.

Second impressions - Still funny
The cast was well chosen, down to the smallest part they were spot on and OMG the EastEnders talk brought back memories from my time in London.

So what's it about? Jimmy Connelly, a London milk man, spars with current middle weight British champion and by chance the champ breaks his hand on Jimmy's chin. As the fight for the Middle Weight Championship Belt has already been set up, the Milk Man aka Calcium Kid has to step in but is surrounded by ppl who all have delusions of grandeur.
Jimmy Connely's mother - the Massage Therapist a hooker
Herbie Bush - the promoter and on-trae-prin-nur a pimp
Paddy O'Flanaghan - the trainer
Stan - Jimmy's best friend who sells him out for dosh (Or a Mercedes)
Apart from Jimmy who just wants his own life back and a quiet wank in the mornings, they all seem insane.

I liked the movie, it was funny, quirky and it had some good acting in there.

What I noticed, and I have been talking about this before is, when Orlando is himself (as in almost no make-up and normal street clothes like he wore in TCK) he isn't beautiful. You notice all the imperfections, his broken nose, his curly hair which doesn't really suit his face or the shape of his head. Too strong in the chin. That guy is no etheral elf. This is just the bloke next door.
And because he isn't beautiful you see him as the normal bloke and can focus on his acting rather than his prettiness.
So yeah he did a good job, and he was funny as the naive, a bit dumb milk man.

Alice, I agree the ending was a bit weak - but we all know that Jimmy could have never won against Mendez, so having the fight done Pete's bullying way, I guess they took the best way out.
And I liked the mockumentary way of filming it :)

I am glad you liked it - and you put into words a lot of my feelings about the film. I will defenitly watch it again in a quite moment or even with my hubbie - I think he will like the humor.
But it is reading first for me this weekend - amazon delivered the first 3 J.D.Robb books. I am looking so forward to this.
Have a nice weekend and greetings to Olly.

OH Alice, you are in for a treat. You either like JD Robb's writing or hate it (it's very straight forward with very well drawn characters). But you'll never forget Dallas, Lieutenant Eve :)
Enjoy the reading (and the smut scenes) Image

Amazon HAS the 3 JD Robbs? Which Amazon?

Love to both,

amazon.de, Elfchen, under English Books. They have a waiting time of 8 to 10 days IIRC within Germany.

Una recommended the books. As I am always looking for good stuff to read, I order three directly.
Hope you are better?!

I really enjoyed it myself. I laughed so much. It is quite sad that it will not be released worldwide because of the poor UK box-office and the bad reviews. What I affectionately called "British humour" is happiness to me.

Well to be honest it was a bit of crude British humour. And the situational humour came more from the lower working class delusions of grandeur and the sneakiness than the more black Brit Humour you normally come across.
