Pirates are the best ... sometimes

Watched PotC: AWE last night and I have to admit, even though I liked the whole piece of eight and getting the Pirate-Lords together, I was very dissatisfied with the movie as a whole. Of course, I love pirates, so on this level I will always love the franchise, but what they did to my OTP or better to my favourite character is a whole different story.

Unlike so many others who are Sparrowfans, my favourite character is and always will be Will Turner. Good, old Will, deeply honest, skillfull and patient who hated pirates with a vengeance only to find out that his Dad was one and that he follows the footsteps of his father - whether he likes it or not. And because all for love - a love that was established when he was merely ten years old for chrissake. If I hadn't known about the tag scene after the credits I would have been even more crappy about this movie than I already are.
As I said, judging from the pirate only point of view, I love it. Lots of battles, cool CGIs that don't look like CGIs and loveable pirates but from the Will POV this movie sucked, big time. :s

On Friday we went to the Rhine again (we are there every day, but not always with a camera) and His Hubbiness™ took this picture.

In the background you can see Ehrenhof (Museum of Modern Art - Museum Kunstpalast), the former Planetarium with its copper cupola which is now a concert hall, the sandstone building on the right is the Academy of Arts



Today it is sunny and relatively warm ... weather as it is supposed to be in June. I really hate it when there are no real seasons and a months that is supposed to be rainy and overcast (April) is all of a sudden hot and dry like August.

Gee, I'm glad somebody else wonders about the major jump in Will's character. You see, I've never understood why he wanted to save his father all of a sudden. It is so completely unlikely from the Will we meet in the first movie, and even though I'm glad they made him cooler and more adventurous, this whole thing about wanted to free his father failed to convince me. :-(

I agree with you. Though I am a major OB fan, I was bit dissapointed thropugh all of POTC because the character came through as quite bland all the time.

I was swept away by Will in this movie and went berserk (in teh good, maniac sese of the word :P) in teh last 10 minutes of AWE: as Katt said, I sufferede from "ovaries implosion" and "hormonal overdrive".

I am hoping to get a decent copy and maybe we can see it when I am there (it would be a shame, giving that Mara, you and me together come close to having a Pirates'con ...

Una, I agree on most of the things you say about POTC AWE - at first I wasn't sure, if I like the movie, it was quite different from the first two, but after seeing it twice, I rather think it is super.
I was quite shocked about the end at first - thinking it very unfair for Will and Elisabeth.
There are some hefty discussions on some forums, about the curse being lifted after ten years - but I am not sure about this.
I likes OB very much in this movie - I hope he can find a few contemporary roles now - something different - I think he can play angry characters quite well.

Oh I like the movie, I like the action and all. It is one amazing pirate movie.

I'm fine, got over the chemo better than time before last. :)
OB is starring in a play in London soon, some of my flister are going there - it seems to be a contemporary play. :)

I will have to keep my final opinion of POTC 3 for when I have actually gotten to see the end of the movie, but I liked what I saw of it :)

have to agree, I felt the same way! Will was my favorite character ever since the first movie. Capt' Jack was funny in number one, but it's like the writers ran out of things for him to say in number two and number three? ACK! I think I sad through half of it with my jaw dropped wondering where they got this crack from, and the other half rubbing my numb ass and wondering if the feeling would ever return!

Exactly. Even though Jack had his funny moments (and the most uotable one-liners) but that was just it, I think Will and the others had more lines than Capt'n Jack.

I'm so mad at the writers, after all the shit they had to go through, to see each other only every ten years is sooo sad. And I don't see Elizabeth fiddling her thumbs on that island to wait for Will, she is too much of a pirate (and similar in character to Jack) than to quietly sit and wait.

ya, the ending kind of sucked and when my friend told me there was an important scene at the very end I kind of predicted what it would be. Seems to me there was no reason they couldn't see each other more than once every 10 years. Sure, she couldn't go with him ALL the time, but there wasn't any reason they couldn't meet at sea, if I'm getting the mythology right? They wasted the good parts of the storyline that ought to have been developed more, like the tragedy of Davy Jones and how he was neglecting his true duties, etc. etc.

Yeah I had the feeling as well that they wasted a lot of the traditional lore around Davy Jones, also the whole Flying Dutchman lore is different from what they showed in POTC 2 & 3.

ya, I was wondering about that, all of a sudden they were talking about how the Dutchman was supposed to escort souls lost at sea and I thought "did I miss something in the last movie?"
