Remember my picspam about little icebear Knut from the zoo in Berlin? Well, so-called animal activists now demand that the bear is put down. Yep, you read right, they want him killed as he is not raised species' appropriate. The way he is right now - seeing humans as his family - he will not survive in the wilderness. Well considering that the Zoo Berlin wanted to keep Knut I think the point is moot.
The Zoo in Leipzig already killed a young bear pup earlier this year because he was not raised species' appropriate as the activists put pressure on them. If these activists go to court because of Knut I will hand in a court order sueing them for murdering endangered species.
Jeesh, I think that is animal rights going to far. What about Knut's right to live? He is having fun, he learns, he is in safety. His real icebear mom didn't want him and almost killed him after birth. Biologists think he will forget his human foster daddy as he grows older and he is transferred into a normal enclosure. Besides, in Norway/Finland? there are also bottle raised icebears about the same age as Knut and the zoo officials in Berlin want him transferred there, so that these icebears, who were fostered by humans, can learn together what it means to be icebears.
Oh and the animal activists in Finland think it is a good idea to raise animals whose animal parents repudiated their offspring, as most species are endangered anyway and the zoos have the obligation to retain the species, even if they do not exist in the wilderness anymore. So there, stupid German animal activists!

How can anyone suggest to kill him???

This reminds me of all those so-called animal lovers who berated us for getting Chica and Cenour out of Spanish animal asylums. They said it wasn't very pro-animal to get dogs from Spain when there are so many here in animal shelters that wait for new homes. Well, there is a big difference between animal shelters here in Germany and in Spain.
In Germany, the animals are safe, warm, well fed and they find a home eventually, no matter how long they have to wait.
In Spain, the animals are killed (either gassed or starved) after 8 to 21 days in these perreras. Once an animal ends up in an animal shelter in Spain that means a death sentence for said animal.

I guess there are animal activists and animal activists. And those who think it is more species appropriate to kill an animal rather than letting it live and learn on its own can go to hell.

Oh, I am very unsure on animal activists issue. Take me right, I HATE suffering of animals, but many recent cases make me think that the animal activist movement is getting out of control. Harassing, even assaulting people working in the government testing laboratories (as it seems to happen here in UK) is totally WRONG in my book. I would understand if the activists were pursuing their course through persuading the government to change their position, but I absolutely don't understand why do they need to harass the workers.. Oh, yes! We like the animals but we hate the people!

And now this !!!

I can understand your indecisiveness, it is the same with me. I'm against mindless suffering of animals. And I am against all the animal testing of make-up etc. On the other hand, I rely on medicine that was tested on animals. And suffering the side effects I do, I don't want to imagine what real suffering they went through while all these medicines were still tested.
It is a vicious circle. But I agree with you, as long as an animal is NOT suffering, it should be left well alone. These animal activist (those who want to have Knut killed as well as those who attack the workers) should rethink their politics.

When I was younger, my mom used to tell me ... "If one is kind to animals, they are kind to humans as well."

Yeah that'S what I was told as well. That is why I said so-called animal rights activists. I mean hello??? Last year they already shot the only living brown bear in the Alps because it was feeding off sheep that was up in the mountains. They said ppl could get killed or injured if they allowed the bear to roam free.
For weeks they tried to capture him (half-assed I might add) and no one really saw him then as soon as they agreed to shoot him, he was seen by two hunters and BANG! Bruno the bear was dead.
it is a sad world.

I wished they should have shoot the bear with tranquillizers, instead of shooting it dead ...

Let me get this straight

Using that logic, Angelina Joilie's new kidlet should be "put down" because he is Vietnamese, and he's not going to be raised "culture-appropriate" in her Western-style home. In fact, three out of four of her kids are not being raised as they would have been in their birth country! ONOES! This has got to stop! Even though their lives in thier birthplaces would have sucked due to poverty, disease and strife, it just ain't natural! CALL THE COPS! CALL THE PRESS! GET THE HYPDERMICS!

Morons.

Oh absolutely, and anyone not living in their respective countries and/or keeping animals. After all, cats and dogs and esp. guinea pigs don't live in their respective habitats as well.
Let's put them all down!!!

Good thing the German public won't have it. There are already court orders to put the little icebear under protection of the law. After the Bruno Bear disaster last year ppl are very conscious over here.

Yep that is Chica :) She is a Border Terrier Mix and 9 years old. We have her since March last year. She was at a perrera because ppl didn't like her anymore because she was too old, too blind, too lame on her hind legs ... since we have her, she is well fed, her hind legs are fantastic and her eyes are okay-ish. She can only see shapes but that is enough, she has fantastic hearing and never wanders off more than five meters away from us.
Pics of Chica: http://scottishlass.livejournal.com/192000.html

Since September last year we have a foster dog, called Cenour. He looks like a beige-coloured wolf. He can't hear anything and his owner put him in a perrera to be killed as Cenour was not fit as a hunting dog anymore. He is such a little klutz but really charming and I get mad at his former owner that he thought he deserved to die.
Post of Cenour with vids of him still in Spain, frightened, almost starved and now this winter at our home, happy, well fed, in his thick winter coat.

it was love on first sight with Chica, and Cenour was an emergency and he needed a foster home, so we took him in. I can't imagine a life without the two of them.
