Eclectic musical tastes
Dec. 31st, 2006 01:37 pmI have always been around music. When I was a little kid living with my great-grandparents there was always music on. On the radio, on the grammophone (yep they still had one) and my great-grandmother was always singing (she was a mezzo-soprano professionally) - I was raised on classical music (Opera/Ballett) from Bizet to Strauss, from Mozart to Debussy. And of course, Celtic music, from bagpipes to uillean pipes to sinois. Then there was my great-grandfather's love for jazz and swing so a good amount of Duke Ellington and the rat pack was thrown into my musical education as well.
My mom was a The Who fan and anything classical rock from the 70's as well as The Kinks. And when I started out to buy myself music Punk was just dying off and giving way for the New Romantics (my first ever album was Dirk wears white socks by Adam and the Ants). I loved and still love early Dark Wave, EBM and Goth Rock. Celtic Rock was also big and I still have a soft spot for bands like The Alarm, Big Country and New Model Army in my heart. Sisters of Mercy - OMG I looked like their guitarist for the longest time, I wonder what has become of her?
When I started out to dance Indian classical Baghavad Natyam I started to love Bollywood tunes and the wonderful music that is created by A.R. Rahman.
And now I start a new decade and I just recently have found I cannot resist JPop.
SMAP owns me at the moment. I know it is just LA LA LA music, but damn if I don't sing along and get into a good mood. I'm planning to take it with me to my treatments. I need something fun and loud and good timey there.
Then there is Glay as well as Arashi. OH and I shouldn't forget Clazziquai which is a Korean band. Baka, deska? I don't care :)
I went to the Japanese video store the other day but it is for Japanese only - or better put, for ppl fluent in Japanese as the owners only speak Japanese and their application forms are all in Japanese as well. Oh well, I think I will get Gift from Yesasia.com then. I really need to watch the dorama and I don't care if it is raw (without subs).
I hope my SMAP Cds are in the post already. I bought several off ebay, and hopefully they'll be here in no time. Need more music :)

Date: 2006-12-31 02:26 pm (UTC)He-he-he, you know, scottishlass, this is exactly the same story with me! :D
I've found out J-pop for myself only in 2006, but since than there are a lot of Japanese pop songs in my play lists - they are so melodious, well performed and the language sounds beautiful!
Well, among my J-pop CD's there are a lot of SMAP's! :) At first I bought their "Lion's Heart" single only intending to find out what kind of music "Kimura's band" sings. And the choice of CD was quite haphazard from my side - I just liked "Lion's Heart" cover more! :)
But very soon I became a SMAP addict! :)Yeah, they are not a GREAT pop-band, but many SMAP songs are so nice and pleasant - they put me in a a cheerful mood on my way to work, or when I do some job at home...
Usually I purchase their CD's at Amazon-Japan or at Japan CD.com

Date: 2006-12-31 03:52 pm (UTC)Yep, that's what has happened to me too. I never was a boy band fan, but SMAP changed that. I like the harmonies they are very 80's with the whole melodies interweaving in the background.

May be in some way SMAP's style brings to recollection for me the music of my youth - exactly 80-s. :)
And happy New Year to you!

Date: 2007-01-02 07:22 pm (UTC)Most of my SMAP things have been converted from youtube & concert vids - not the best of quality but at least I can get a complete CD filled with stuff.

Date: 2007-01-02 09:15 pm (UTC)BTW, if you don't have "Say You Trust Me", you can d/l it via the link, which is in the last post in my own LJ - I just uploaded it for my local friends, who like SMAP, too. Of course, my LJ is in Russian, but the name of the song near the download link is in English - you will recognize it. There is only one link in that post.
The most part of my SMAP collection (at present it's about 23-25 songs, not so big yet!) are from CD's I purchased in Japan Amazon... Or from different Inet sites and youtubes - I searched for them very insistently and industriously ;)
Well, if you want, I can give you a list of the songs I have now - if someone is absent in your collection, just tell me, I will upload it for you, this is not a problem for me.

Date: 2007-01-04 01:23 pm (UTC)I like the romantic songs alright, like Aitakunatte and Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana but I also like their dance numbers quite a bit like Bang Bang Vacance, Five Respect and Dynamite. I think my favourite songs are Every You (Don na Ii koto in English), Take Off, Lionheart, Aitakunatte and Tomodachi E.

Date: 2007-01-04 03:34 pm (UTC)As for SMAP "noisy" songs... I don't like so much just to listen to them, I prefer watching them! Sone of their dance numbers are very funny and bright. Some month ago I downloaded at Creme a video with SMAP "Flapper" - when they sing and dance it in some glazy scarlet costumes with a lot of chorus dancing girls around. It looked hot and hilarious at the same time! :D
