Chica is now with us for 2 months and it seems as if she has been living with us forever. From a little skinny dog she has transformed into a beautiful, cute little lady. His Hubbiness and I love her to bits and when she comes to us, putting one of her little paws onto our knees or arms (that is her way to tell us she wants to be cuddled), it is a wonderful feeling. She is a little miracle :)

Yep, and even though she is already 8 years old, can you imagine that some ppl didn't want her and just threw her away like trash? I can't understand that. If she had stayed in this perrera (officially an animal shelter but really death row for dogs) she would have been dead by now.

It is a sad thing, really. But it's people like you who make it worth while. I wish I could adopt a lot more pets from the animal shelters around here, they are so adorable and are just looking for a home. And the sad thing is, there are a lot of animals that never get that chance.

My husband and I are thinking of applying as a foster family for dogs from Spain before them finding a home for good here in Germany. The perraras in Spain just burst with dogs, and especially dogs which are sought after by families over here in Germany. Mostly mixes which are wonderful family dogs. When you go to animal shelters over here, the only dogs you'll find are either puppies or dogs falling under the dangerous dogs regulation (like Staffordshire Bulldogs, American Pitbull etc. which have caused a few deaths in recent years and these races are now under special regulation, the dogs AND their owners have to pass a special test, and while most dogs pass it, their owners don't, so the dogs have to go). So they end up in the shelters and most ppl are actually afraid of them as there have been deadly incidents in the past.
But back to the Spanish dogs, if you don't have the time or money to help, help in a different way, look for a animal shelters who accepts donations ... donate some dog and cat food, something special like bones or catnip, fresh lettuce or carrots. Or volunteer as a walker for dogs, most shelters over here need ppl who walk the dogs regularly and I imagine in Canada it is the same.

We all three are so lucky ... We had already applied for three other dogs of which the first one had already died, the second one was so ensconced in his shelter family that they kept him for good and the third was given to another family as our mail ended up in the spam file of the organization.
We were already loosing our faith, thinking perhaps we are not destined to help such a creature, but then one of the organizers send us her photos directly and we knew .. She is THE ONE. And she is, she slipped so effortlessly into our routine. She was so frugal in her first days, it was almost heart-breaking. She didn't know how to play, or what any of the playthings were for, she was cautious but as she saw how we cuddled and loved her, she got more confident and her lovable character came to the surface with all the spleens and quirks such an old lady of eight had to have.
