1. What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a professor of literature and a published author.
2. Did you follow through? If not, what happened?
After my MA and especially after my PhD I couldn't stand university anymore. I needed to get out of the ivory tower of knowledge. Besides, government cuts didn't leave me any choice, no money for fresh PhDs to work as tutors and eventually becoming tenured.
As for becoming a writer - just not good enough.
3. Is your life turning out the way you thought it would when you were a kid? If not, is it better or worse?
Never thought I would marry, but marriage turned out better than I thought. At least I didn't turn out to be like my mother.
4. Paradoxes aside, if you could time-travel back to when you were 10 years old, what would you tell your 10-year-old self?
Pursue your dreams, and stick to what your great-grandparents tell you and show you - values, knowledge, education. Stand up to your mother!
5. Do you think the child you were, would like the adult you've become?
I think so. I guess I came as close to what I wanted to become as I could manage it.
It is strange how life turns out ... I mean here I am - married, working in a field that really interests me, but then again so far removed from my initial life plan as I ever can be. After all the shit that happened to me, I'm glad I made it - hopefully I will continue to do so. I just wish my great-grandparents would have had a chance to see me as an adult, to enjoy me as a young student and also as a married woman.
I hope that they would approve.
