It seems the article indeed confirms that Jang Dong Gun and Kimura Takuya will be filming in a World War 2 movie with production cost of about 30 billion won. Title is not yet decided.
The backdrop to the story will be the Normandy Landings in France as well as dealing with the oriental motif of being an Asian in war torn (Nazi) Germany. Filming will start at the end of this year in France, and elsewhere in Europe.
It then goes on that both Jang Dong Gun and Kimura Takuya are well known overseas for their Hollywood productions Laundry Warrior and I Come With A Rain.

WOHOO!! This is so great. I really like Jang Dong-gun. He already guested in SMAPxSMAP in 2006 (6th of February IIRC) and he and Kimura seemed to be friends already back then. Dong-gun even said his mom will make Kimchee for Kimura when he comes to Korea ..which incidentally he was given by Dong-gun when Kimura came filming for HERO last year.

Date: 2008-05-22 09:05 am (UTC)Possibly, this could be good for Kimura-kun's movie career, ne? More roles in international project + filming in Europe = more known he will be in the international movie circles... More chances for new invitations.
Personally I'm not enthusiastic about the theme at all. Japanese in Normandie in the 2d WW. This means Kimura-kun will play bad guy and his character will be killed, ne? ^___^

Date: 2008-05-22 09:34 am (UTC)Dong-gun will probably be playing an ex-patriate Korean who is in the US Army coming to war torn Europe via D-Day. And Kimura could play a high ranking Japanese soldier who gets interred in Germany, waiting to be trialed.
During the last few days of the war in Europe, there were quite a lot of Japanese officials who tried to get back to Japan and were jailed by the Allies to await their trials. Or Japanese who gave themselves up to the Allies on a voluntary basis, because they had family here in G. and knew that the war was over, also for Japan.
There were quite a few Koreans and Chinese with the US Army, but also ex-patriate Japanese who worked as translators and investigators who planned the trials etc. Could be that this will be some kind of court drama. Though the movie mentioned action scenes as well.
As long as we don't know the actual plot it can be anyone's guess so far. As both Jang and Kimura can do both, the physical side of action and the psychological side of a human drama, I think we are in for a treat hopefully. :)

I'd like to be wrong, but it makes me to wait something about "ugly cruel Russian bears" and "holy sweet US liberators who won the 2dWW by themselves" in the story.

Date: 2008-05-22 10:09 am (UTC)As for bad ugly bears ... I don't think that is what ppl think of the Russians anymore. Most of it was propaganda back 70 years ago and to tell you the truth I can understand why some Russian soldiers behaved like they did when they pushed forward to the West in the last stages of WW2. As for Russia = bad guys and US = good guys ... well that is still a remnant of the Cold War and is luckily not much portrayed anymore in movies.
I could say the same ... a lot of ppl in the US still think we are all Nazis as well (I still remember this one meeting in the US when I was on the East coast for the first time and ppl upon hearing that I came from Germany greeted me with Heil Hitler and thought we were still greeting each other like this in Germany.) So you can see every nation still seems to be stigmatized from a time that has been luckily over for more than 60 years.

Date: 2008-05-22 01:17 pm (UTC)You are right, perhaps Germany as a whole can relate to the pain and terror the war years had on Russia as the last war years took a toll on the German public (the Nazi were all sitting in their bunkers or offing themselves while the people suffered). Additionally, because we know what our nation in the name of one man did, we are quite aware of war and try to prevent it nowadays.
German soldiers did a lot of abominable things ... beginning from the shoar of the Jews to raping, pillaging and murdering complete villages and towns in Russia, Italy and the Balcans. That the Russian soldiers who had witnessed the aftermath of all that while advancing West wanted to retaliate makes sense in a very cruel way.
The people of Germany, not the soldiers and officer who were responsible for that, had to pay the price.
I'm also quite glad that after 60 years, Russians and Germans can meet on a friendly basis. The history shows that we have had always relations one way or the other and we are Europeans after all.

Date: 2008-05-22 02:42 pm (UTC)Yeah, this are the tragic rules and habits of war - civilians always suffer more. :( In the USSR, from the 26,6 mln. victims of the 2d WW only about 8,6 mln. were solders.
I'm also quite glad that after 60 years, Russians and Germans can meet on a friendly basis.
Right you are, I'm very glad about it, too! This is not wise to hang on enmity for generations.
I remember, when I was young, in 80-s, I once spoke with some foreigner I worked with... The man was American Jew. We spoke about history, and the 2d WW, too. And he suddenly asked me: "Are you, young Russians, still have enmity to the young Germans - because of war?" Honestly I was deeply surprised by the question and answered: "No, of course, not. Why should I? They are not guily in it." I still don't know why he had such a strange idea.
Personally, I was always glad to know that even in those cruel war days my compatriots were able to show not only hatred to defeated foe, but mercy, too - and to see in them human beings. And, thanks Lord, these examples were not rare, too. Humans are complicated creatures and they are not always driven with negative emotions.
The history shows that we have had always relations one way or the other and we are Europeans after all.
Honestly, I don't think about us, Russians as about Europeans. Yeah, we a "whites", but we belong to different civilization than the nations of the West.
But, anyway, I agree with you that in history Germany and Russia were able to cooperate with each other very effectively and did it quite often. A strange paradox - when we, Russians do not fight with you, Germans, we go on very well with you - better than with any other nation of the West :D !

Date: 2008-05-22 03:59 pm (UTC)But on the other hand, I really wanna see Kimura acting in a sweet, simple and cute dorama again. Just like "Pride" or "Long vacation" which have nothing to do with war, torture, politic or economy ! Something tells me that's never gonna happen :(
