There is a discussion about releasing one of the top terrorists of the 1970's here in Germany. Brigitte Mohnhaupt was one of the leaders of the left-radical R.A.F. (Red Army Fraction) which terrorized the German public with its killings, kidnappings and bombings.
She was sentenced to a double life time but unlike in the US a life sentence in Germany only means that the prisoner can be released after 25 years in prison. Now she is asking for a pardon along with another terrorist, Christian Klar, and both never ever apologized to the families of their victims.
Now, why should I bother? I was a kid when all this happened. Yeah I was a child but as a child I really felt the terror all the more. Life in the 70's in Germany, especially in the big cities was not always nice. The bomb threads, the killings and kidnappings were very much in the forefront of our minds. A car's misfire send us kids to the ground because we thought someone was using a gun. Flying was a risk due to bombings and also hijacking (planes were hijacked in the mid 70's). They killed politicians, body guards and bystanders and now they are supposed to receive a pardon??
WTF!!!
Besides, my great-grandmother was so upset about the bloody kidnapping of the President of Employer's Federation, H.M. Schleyer, that she stroked in the night. She was so upset that day, was rantingabout these ppl and wondering how they could do that. Those who have been already released never showed any remorse, even thinking that these radical measures should be used as a tool to keep democracy in its place. Yeah right, assholes.
Double life time sentence should be just that ... being shut away for a life time. Does this mean I have a grudge? Could be but these terrorists bittered my childhood with their cruelty and violence. Why should we show mercy in the face of innumerous dead ppl who could have led a meaningful life the last 30 to 24 years? The took away the opportunity for ppl to grow old with their loved ones, to experience life to the fullest.
ETA: It was decided that Brigitte Monhaupt will be released on bail from prison in March.
