Asian doramas galore
Sep. 15th, 2006 07:10 pmFor those on my flist who don't know what I'm talking about ... please refer to
kitsune714's LJ entry about Asian drama series. It is very good and informative.
Anyway, it all happened a long time ago. When I saw Water Margin in the 1980's I started to love Japanese TV and cinema. Kurosawa et al. became my favourite directors. This all culminated in a huge crush on King Hu movies (Scent of Zen etc.) and other Easter Martial Arts movies. It all stopped strangely enough with award winning, highly praised Tiger and Dragon. I didn't like that at all, and so I pretty much stopped watching any Eastern movies and only watched the occasional Korean mystery thriller like JSA, 2009 Lost Memories and Shiri.
I have to admit I have a thing for those Asian boys with Manga hair ... :D And today's Taiwanese Top actors like Mike He, Joe Cheng and Vic Zhou cater to this little habit of mine beautifully :D
Besides the Taiwanese mini series are so fluffy and cheesy, they seem to be like Bollywood movies without the dancing but with a bit more sex between the OTP.
So here are my reviews on some of the Taiwanese series I have seen so far:
It started with a kiss with Joe Cheng and Ariel Lin Y Chen
20 episodes of fluffiness with a lot of cruelness thrown in. Xiang Qi is a not a very bright pupil who falls in love with the biggest geek and hottest guy at school, Zhi Shu. He is rich and an intellectual snob and teases hre ruthlessly that she, the dumb one, even dares to have feeling for him. Unfortunately, this increases when Xiang Qi's house collapses and they are taken in by an old school chum of her father who happen to be ... yes, Zhi Shu's father.
It is heart wrenching and sometimes even sad to watch Xiang Qi continuing to love Zhi Shu even if he does his damndest to humiliate her. But little by little she wears him down and he realizes that only with her he is a human being with a temper and emotions, while at all other times he is only a highly scoring geek and robot.
The fluffiness does make me go AWWWWW, but the things Zhi Shu flings at Xiang Qi sometimes are really not only snobbish but also very cruel. And the whole: You are my only love, I love you till I die and forsake all other happiness-attitude of Xiang Qi grates on my nerves. It goes against all I know and feel about feminism and this attitude of being a doormat to the object you love ... nope, can't understand it. But it works in this series, and sometimes you just want to yell at Zhi Shu to actually give in to his feelings he obviously has for her and you understand that he feels like a wolf in a trap in this love triangle, where the wolf gnaws off his paw in order to escape, Zhi Shu strikes out at Xiang Qi verbally, because this thing he is feeling for her is too big, too scary and let's him loose control.
Devil Beside You with Mike He and Rainie.
I hail the hotness that is Mike He, even with stupid hairdo and somewhat questionable fashion sense he is HOT. And you can believe him and be a puddle at his feet when he talks about this love interest he has in Qi Yue who will become his step sister, and refers to him and her as dangerous siblings (which is a reference to incest, even though in the Western world to step siblings without blood connections is not considered incest). Mike He as Ah Meng is mean, he is cheeky and he falls for his big sister. And the good girl falls for him, even though she had a crush on another guy, Yuan Yi, to whom she had written a love letter that she delivered ... to the wrong guy. To avoid humuliation of exposure, she agrees to be Ah Meng's personal servant and sometimes I just thought Oh-uh .. the way Mike He looks at Qi Yue like a predator. It is never spoken out loud but I could imagine him telling her to be a more ... well personal servant. Anyway, towards the middle and end of the series I actually was routing more for Yuan Yi and his girl friend and the odd but cute pair Li Xiang and Ping Ying (??).
A fluffy, although somewhat darker series with a surprising end. Well, sort of.
Love Contract with Mike He and Ariel Lin Y Chen
OMG; barechestedness of Mike He and an absolutely adorable OTP, that struggles to overcome their respective pasts and present.
I'm only halfway through the series and already I'm in love, Xiao Feng (Ariel) and Ken are an adorable and believable couple, even though they need a lot of time to finally come to realize in all their helplessness and also uniqueness they compliment each other. And hot kisses between Ariel and Mike who have a much better on screen chemistry than Mike and Rainie IMHO, even though Mike as Ah Meng is the bad boy in Devil Beside You. I just love the way Xiao Feng comes out of her shell and Ken gets the silent but angry young man attitude straightened out.
One of the scenes I like is when Xiao Feng is totally waisted and Ken puts her on his MX-machine to get her home. Despite her porcupine exterior he feels a lot for her and cannot stand the thought she is on the street passed out by beer.
mArs with Vic Zhou and Barbie Hsu
Only watched two eps so far and I love it. And Vic Zhou is hot. YAY! Then factor in the motorcycle race courses of Japan and you have a hot, angsty OTP.
Tokyo Juliet with Ariel Lin Y Chen
watched two eps and SQUEED!! More of that later :)
*sigh*
I don't know why, but atm these are the things that rock my boat TV wise. I can't care less about regular TV, all the German and US American crap. Too crude, too obvious ... too ... dunno.
