Date: 2007-03-09 03:50 am (UTC)I had no idea you were a vegetarian! What does the "ovo-lacto" part mean?
Re: Kimura Takuya. I can totally understand why you think so! :D

Date: 2007-03-09 05:51 am (UTC)ovo-lacto means eggs and milk, it is the biggest group of vegetarians. It means you don't eat any meat but eat and drink dairy products as well as eat eggs. Some also include fish (like me).
Then there are vegans who don't eat any animal products at all and do not use any animal products (like leather etc.).
I became a vegetarian when I was 17 after visiting a slaughter house on a school trip. It's not really for ethical reasons as I think that if I have to kill an animal in order to survive I probably will but as I can have a choice in our day and age, I choose to eat vegetarian. Besides, since I was little I didn't like meat that much.
Chicken is my guilty pleasure as I was ordered by my doctors to eat chicken to replenish my B12 during and after chemo.
You need to watch a movie with Shah Rukh Khan. He is also a bit like Kimura as he has an onscreen presence that draws you in (points to icon). But yeah Kimura rocks :)

Date: 2007-03-09 07:03 am (UTC)Thanks for the info on ovo-lacto vegetarians. Y'know I was contemplating to be a vegetarian last year since, like you, I don't like to eat meat that much (except fish!). It is interesting to view it from a religious perspective, though, 'cause as you know I'm a Muslim, and each year we do a "slaughtering" ritual as part of our religious obligations.
You need to watch a movie with Shah Rukh Khan.
I have! :) I watched Kuch Kuch Hota Hai ages ago, and it was the only Indian film that left an impression on me. I think I mentioned this to you before, some of the singing in Bollywood can get a bit too much for me :D I have, however, written down the recs that people from my f-list (including you!) gave me a while back. Next time I go to that shop with a crazy selection of Indian DVDs, I'll definitely browse around ^^

Date: 2007-03-10 12:51 pm (UTC)I wonder ... is this really in the Quran or is it part of the many writings of holy Muslim teachers? We have a similar rule in Christian belief that we only should eat fish on Fridays (having something to do with Jesus being crucified on a Friday) - this rule is never mentioned in the Bible but in the Catechism which is basically a rule book from various synodes (meetings of Popes and bishops over the last centuries). Same with Muslims and Jews not eating pork, the reason why is not bcause the animal is especially dirty but that in former times pork meat couldn't be preserved properly without using very expensive salt in warmer climates. In colder climates ppl didn't have salt but used the way of preservation of smoking (with the extensive woods around, there was plenty of fire wood too) so this rule about not eating pork because it went off too fast never came into fruition here.
Anyway, what I wanted to say is that perhaps you could get away with being a vegetarian AND being it because of ethical reasons. I mean isn't Islam in its core a preventive (i.e. caring) religion which respects all life?
I could be wrong though as it is a long time since I have read a translation of the Quran a couple of years back.
I have to say that I find many rules in all religions, be it Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu and whatnot, silly at best. Especially rules that sanction women when it is clear the rules are there because it seems men can't control themselves.
Masala filmi aka Bollywood
Yeah the song numbers can wear you down in some movies but most of the time, SRK movies have beautifully shot dance numbers that rather enhance the story than breaking the story flow (like in most movies). And he is a fine dancer, very physical like Gene Kelly from the old Hollywood musicals. He is just THERE when he acts and dances. KKHH is a cutesy movie with Kajol, Rani Mukherjee and Salman Khan in the supporting roles who are part of the creme de la creme of Bollywood actors.
Thank you for liking the new banner ... I wanted something with Kimura in bed *big grin*

Date: 2007-03-12 01:26 pm (UTC)I am pretty sure that this is included in the Quran, though I cannot remember which suurah. I will look it up and let you know! ;)
Thanks for the info on pork ~ very interesting!! I will have to check too if this is something included in the Quran or just part of the hadith. The thing is, in Islam the hadith supports the content of the Quran, and though their degrees in "correctness/reliability" vary, the more reliable ones should be able to be traced back to the prophet.
But for me, personally, I find that most of the religious stuff I do is because I like doing so, and/or they are in accord with my own beliefs. For example, I don't drink nor eat pork because I don't like them. Of course there is the fact that it's a prohibition in Islam, which is always going to be a part of the reason why I refrain from consuming them (I'd be lying if I said it wasn't), but more than anything it's because I don't care much for both items (I've tried them once or twice, before).
I'm very sure we can be a vegetarian despite being a Muslim. The only reason I'm not one is because I still like chicken *grin* In any case, I seldom eat red meat and always prefer fish ^^
Especially rules that sanction women when it is clear the rules are there because it seems men can't control themselves.
Heee... I can understand your view very well!! It is true, in Islam, in the prophet's age the men were very vulgar hence women were strongly encouraged to cover their bodies (including part of the face!). Again, the reason I wear a headveil is because more than anything I like wearing it :) There is nothing stopping me from taking it off for good anyway (and I have had days where I just felt like not wearing it and did so just because! LOL). I believe religions should not limit us or become a hindrance in our lives. It just depends on how one views things ^^
