Where the writer went wrong ...
... even with all the good intentions.
Yoon Ji Ryun is the screenwriter of BOF. While s/he had good intentions, making BOF an adaption so uniquely Korean, s/he could not leave the original story line enough to make it even more Korean than anything.
- making Jandi into a mopping wimp
Makino's best feature, the reason why we cheer her on, is her will power and her strength. These are also the reasons why both Domyoujii and Rui fall for her. Yoon Ji Ryun makes her into a weeping, incapable, whiney wimp. NOT GOOD!!!
- the BFF are more of an OTP than the OTP
While the good relationship between Makino and Rui is canon, Yoon Ji Ryun overdoes it. S/he even make them do things only the real OTP in Korean dramas do. Either stop it and cling to the original story line or go all out and CHANGE THE FRELLING ENDING!!!
- Jun Pyo doesn't show any signs of progress
Domyouji became more human in the progress of the manga/Japanese/Taiwanese adaptions. By this time he is overcome with fear of ever loosing the only thing that makes him more human and into a better human being and he already plots how to get back at his mother. In the Korean version he romps around with his fiancee, is obnoxious as ever and shows that the hard times his supposed OTP is going through is more a matter of mocking and *toughening up the pampered heir*. Gee, dude, your OTP lost everything because of you, at least have the decency to feed her instead of eating all the ramen, she and her little bro cooked and don't mock her living conditions.
- Ramdomness and out of the blue shouting thy name is BOF
While we do not get to know why of all ppl Akira is part of the F4 (his dad probably wanted to polish him up and not have a dumbass heir as in My Boss, My Hero), Akira is so well-integrated into the F4 and never doubts his friends' loyalty. Yoon Ji Ryun turned Prince Song into a shouting, suicidal whimp in seconds. Why I appreciate the reaction to fan demand for more backstory/screentime of Prince Song, I do not appreciate the execution. That scene with Woo bin and Ji Young was like an extra added tag line of a mediocrely written fan fic.
- Ji Young fucking up his hand and thus his future
Soujirou is a badass, we know this BUT he is so much the heir of his family he would never actively seek a discontinuation of it. While he tries to show his disinterest he loves what he does, whether as tea ceremony master in the original story line, or as pottery master in this adaption. It is what defines him and is much stronger than any woobiness he still feels about his lost first love or his asshole father. Yoon Ji Ryun scripting here sucked big time and destroyed a character with unnecessary drama reeking of badly written teenage fan fic.
- Ga Eul and Ji Young are doomed
While Yoon Ji Ryun swans along the original story line with this one, he unnecassarily makes Soujirou much crueller than he actually is. Because he knows Yuki is essentially a good girl, he tries to let her down gently but sternly. Not because he wants to teach her a lesson or because he is so bitter about his first love, but because he likes her ... a lot, and knows that in a different setting, they might have a chance at love. But be as it may, Soujirou knows he is too messed up to ever be worthy of Yuki's love. In the Korean adaption Ji Young is a bastard who plays with Ga Eul to the point of cruelty. While Soujirou tries to protect, here he just shows off that he could get anyone into bed if he wanted.
While I fell for the Korean adaption in the first couple of episodes, since ep11 I have been falling out of it just as well. The first changes were appreciated, but the wimpy-nation of several characters makes me sick because I know the story line and while I do not like several story lines in the original manga, I now can appreciate them in the Japanese and Taiwanese adaptions.
I thought I would never say this but I think I'll give Meteor Garden and Hanadan another try. After BOF nothing can really surprise/disgust/annoy me anymore.
