What is it?

What is it with the sudden Firefly craze all over my friend's LJ? I have seen the first three eps when it first came out and thought it was a rip-off of Farscape in a bad Western in space kind of setting. *nuff said (and no I don't want to read wonderful reviews of the show and/or movie in the replies to convince me otherwise!!!)

Anyway ... I have changed 243 review books and accounts (so double the amount) makes happy dance ... if I continue this way I will be finished by 6th of August *sigh* Taking a well deserved break now and put my feet up ... damn blood circulation :s

I'd say the reason it's made such a craze recently is because the Sci-Fi channel has picked it up and aired the first ep (possibly two? not sure...) last week, as the lead in to their big Sci-Friday - Firefly, SG1, SGA then BSG.

Sorry - it's not a sudden craze with me. I have been a fan since day 1. The reason it's being talked about more recently is probably because there is a Firefly movie coming out, called Serenity. It opens in September - but they have had several advanced screenings over the last summer, which many people on my f-list have been to. Plus, they are airing the show, in order, on Sci-Fi. Fox botched things up by airing the episodes out of order and showing the pilot last.

I've seen the first half of the first season of Farscape on DVD and didn't see that many commonalities other than maybe an oppressive government and spaceships. From what little I saw (which was probably an equal number or episodes of each show) Farscape is about an Earth astronaut thrown into another world who hooks up with a bunch of escaped prisoners - and Firefly is about a group of people struggling to get by after being on the losing side of a war. And things getting complicating after accidentally taking some passengers on, who turn out to be a genius who had experiments performed on her by the Alliance (ie, the oppressive government), and the brother that rescued her.

Thematically the shows seem different to me. As do the characters, and the settings.

And no, I'm not trying to convince you otherwise or give you a wonderful review of the show, but just to try and answer why there is a sudden Firefly craze, and to explain why I don't think it is a Farscape ripoff.

Didn't it last for about 10 episodes, or has Sci Fi picked it up?
